Minimum Graphics Card.?

Im about to order my components to build my own pc, and i want to have a value card, that does the job to a good standard.

I'd like to spend around 鎷?0 (thats around $60) on a graphics card that supports vista.

This is the connections on my motherboard :

PCI 32 bit - 4 x PCISlots

PCI Express Slot - 1 x PCI Express x16 閳?1 x PCI Express x1Slots

So it cant be a AGP card. And also i want it to be a good standard card for games that may come out in 1 or 2 years time if possible.... And at least 256mb memory. 512mb if possible...

And a known make i'd like (ATI or Geforce card?)

Your price range is pretty low to get a video card that is going to be good for games coming out in 2 years and you will probably have to look a touch higher price tag to do that but I can give you some help in making sure you don't get one that is totally awful (and there are some in the price range you are looking for).

In your price range you are going to see a lot of ATI Radeon 7000, 7500, 9250, 9550, 9600. While those were all good cards in their time, their time is long past. AVOID these cards not because they won't work, but because none of them will give good performance by today's standard.

If you are looking at an ATI card look at the newer "x" line like x300, x1300, etc. A hint, the 4 digit ones are a newer line, the number in that tells you how fast it is. So, an x700 is an older line but fast in that line. An x1300 is a newer model but slow in that line so an X700 is a better deal.

Nvidia's crap in your price range is the FX line like Nvidia 5500, 5200, etc or even worse the GeForce 4 series (ugh). Those will not give you what you like.

The Nvidia 8500 (or better) is what you want because it is fast enough for now and has Direct x10 for playing games that come out in the next two years. The Nvidia 7300 is likely what you will end up with in your price range, okay for now, but not likely to have staying power in the next few years (and yes, I own one of these so I can tell you they aren't too bad, but not great).

The Nvidia 6000 series is worth looking at if you can pick up a cheap 6600 or 6800 as they are phasing those out. They are faster than the 7300 by far, but use more electricity and run faster and hotter.

At your budget the best I could come up with is this one :

It is a little faster than the 7300's and 6200's that you will see out there. More importantly it has Direct X 10 capability for down the road and it is designed to make High definition DVD's look better (when the price of blu-ray or HD DVDs come down)

well i would say an AGP card would be best but as it is out of the question i'd say use a PCIE one not just PCI and check this site

www.microdirect.co.uk i've built a lot of computers (its my job) over the years and this site has been the best to work with

Well for $60 your choices are very limited, and its not going to buy you a card that will be able to handle games that may come out in the next few years. Youll be lucky if a $60 card can handle games that are out right now. Your only choices in your price range are low end cards like a 7300gt or x1550 neither of which are much good for gaming but will support Vista. So if your at all serious about gaming your gonna need to spend a bit more money. Wht is the rest of th system going to consist of? And how much money do you have to spend on the system?
