Does anyone have a suggestion for a good Graphics Card for Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars?

I've been at a loss to find a graphics card for my computer that both meets the requirements of the game and is available for my computer. My computer is less than a year old, with over 3 gigahertz for processor speed, 250 gigabytes on the hard drive and 1 gigabyte for RAM. It has a small factory-installed graphics card in it currently, not large enough to handle what the game Tiberium Wars can dish out. The game says a computer will need: "ATI Radeon 8500 or great; Nvidia GeForce4 or great" and goes on to say "ATI Radeon 9200, 9250 PCI; Nvidia GeForce4 MX are not supported". Herein lies the problem--I have PCI ports and a PCIe port. All of the graphics cards that seem to work with C%26amp;C: Tiberium Sun require an AGP port. Does anyone have any ideas for a graphics card that will work?

SLi (Nvidia) or CrossFire (ATi/AMD) is not a good deal.

Unless you snagged a couple graphics cards off the back of a truck or got some other unheard of deal you're much better off buying a single more powerful card. It can be a pain to setup and some games just will not work with properly with a dual card setup.

No, there is no way around it. You need an SLI capable motherboard with a SLI bridge to connect the cards together. The use PCIE slots that are identical. If you do not have this it will not work.

Oh wow, that is a big topic to cover in one post.

From my experience, FSX is one game that will require a good card and a good computer overall to run on the high settings.

Yes, a better graphics card will make it run faster. What they are and what they do...well, a GPU is just like a CPU but it is meant for processing graphic and pixel data.

I will recommend getting a Nvidia card, just because I have had bad experiences with ATI cards. As for models, Anything in the 7000 or 8000 series will do the job.

The cost will be anywhere from the lower 7000 models (around $120 maybe less) to the 8800 GTX (overkill really) which runs about $600-$700.

Installation is pretty easy, just make sure you find out what slot you have on your mobo (motherboard, AGP or PCIEx16), and just pop out the old one and put in the new one and insert the drivers CD and hit install drivers. Simple enough.

Good Luck, and if you have trouble, you can always go to your local best buy and talk to the geek squad guys about it. They will help you find what you are looking for.

Graphics cards control all of the 3d stuff so that your CPU doesn't have to do it.

They are easy to install, you probably have either an AGP or PCI-e slot on your motherboard that your new video card would go in. Check your motherboard manual.

I fly flight sim alot. Mostly on the Vatsim network online. To be honest with you, FSX uses CPU power. All the calculations of airspeed, wind, the motion of the plane, weather and navigation have nothing to do with your video card. FSX uses CPU power.

While video cards will help a little, maybe a little more eye candy, really performance will suffer without a HIGH end cpu. FSX is a little ahead of its time and cannot perform well on the average computer.

Nope. You cannot upgrade the graphics card in a laptop. By the way, not even a triple-sli 8800GTX with a 3.8 ghz Oct-core processor could run 100 FPS on any game, since no screen could support that many visible frames, and the human eye can only view up to about 30-40 FPS without everything you're viewing appear in slow motion.

The Intel Chips are not actual graphics cards and WILL not run any games at any playable speed. The X3100 (On a MacBook) runs World of Warcraft on minimum graphic settings at 15 fps.

What you want is a discreet graphics card, which is an entire processor and RAM chipset devoted to only running what is on your screen, such as 3D and 2D graphics, rather than the Intel Chips (For example, your X3100) which uses the computers personal processor and RAM chips, making everything run pretty slow.

The acer 5920 comes in many variations. Right now I am typing on an acer 5920 with an 8600gt in it. The question is did they remove the MXMII slot from your mother board or just leave it empty and turn on the onboard graphics.

That particular card is a little dated; it's 3 generations old as far as ATi's hardware goes. The latest series of ATi cards are the x3000 series, before that it was x2000, before that x1000, and before that is where the x800 sits.

If you can, get something newer, the ATi x2000 and x3000 series or nVidia's 7000 and 8000 series. In particular any ATi x29**, x39** or nVidia 79** or 88** series card should be good to go for the majority of games out now.

I have the new xbox 360 with the hdmi port in.

I have also just bought a 40inch Samsung 1080p tv.

Im currently running the console through a hdmi cable, however there are some noticable graphics problems that occur through the TV. The main problem being that the shadows in games come out blocky, for example when i play Devil may cry 4, there is a level with loads of trees and light shining in between, but it looks horrible cos all the shadow lines jus look pixelated.

it is an 512mb ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 HyperMemory graphics card. I belive it is a chipset. Im trying to play Halo 2 it loads and runs but is jerky and not playable on a high level. Changing a notebook graphic cards is something that in your case is not possible or something easy to do like in a Desktop. You have what is known as Integrated Graphics Processor that comes bundle with the motherboard of your notebook.

The only thing that you can do (that was already mentioned here) is to put the settings to the lowest values in the game in order to make it easier to the notebook render those Halo 2 graphics.

I had tried to update my graphics card because my computer was having a few problems both running games and just running itself. I researched and was under the impression that if I just simply updated my driver all would be well again. I downloaded what this site told me to and now my computer is worse. It runs slow and sketchy and the color was all messed up. I disabled the driver so I could actually use it but it hasnt helped much. I tried to do a system restore but my computer wont let it. Any suggestions on what to do to fix this and then update my driver?

then choose rollback driver.this should work.

updating your video card driver wont simply makes your computer better. due to demand of memory of todays game old video card sometimes need to be replace by a higher memory and or add more RAM memory for you to be able to play or experience what you are expecting on the game. on your situation that you said "running by itself" you also experience problem, video card might not be the source of the problem. there is a lot of reasons, virus, spyware, corrupt system files, populated hard disk (running low on space), etc.,

Obviously, the first thing to try is going back to 'zero' by uninstalling the driver you presently have installed, preferably after using a free program called 'DriverCleanerPro' which works with nVidia and ATI drivers (also 3DLabs, Creative, Matrox, Realtek and several others).

After installing it reboot into 'safe' mode which will allow you to uninstall the driver from the Device Manager, then run the uninstall wizard for the app and, finally, run 'Driver Cleaner Pro' to fully eliminate all the tidbits that may be left over.

Then as you reboot into normal mode, XP will try to reinstall it's own drivers (since you just got rid of the updated driver) from its CAB files (they have a Cab Cleaner program for cleaning these out also). Try to cancel this process, then install the alternate driver, in your case, I'd try the original driver disk, since it was designed to work with the card.

If that's the driver you're having trouble with, go to the site that made the card and see if their update is the same as the latest nVidia or ATI driver at their respective sites. If the makers of the card only recommend the latest nVidia or ATI update, then there may be other details, such as what specific apps seem to be triggering the problems, that may indicate where the problem may lie. From my experience though, it's the driver itself and not another program.

The RAM on the graphics card has nothing to do with what the motherboard uses. Newer graphics cards use DDR3 and even DDR4 RAM and 99% of new motherboards still use DD2. For your graphics card to work you just need to make sure it has the correct slot for your graphics card, AGP, PCI-e, and if your power supply is big enough to handle it. For an old AGP card I would not worry about you Power Supply as AGP cards don't require much power to run.

Yeah graphics RAM type is associated with the graphics card itself. As long as you find an AGP card with DDR2 you have no problem, did it back when I have AGP system, now it is a Socket 939 PCIE system that's DDR1 running a GDDR3 card.

Basically you just create a title or graphic on a card, light it evenly, and shoot a segment of it onto tape. Capture the video as a RAW AVI, with the TV-Tuner. Then use Ulead MediaStudio to do all of the special effects and editing.

I must assume you are talking about a software companion to the video drivers you have.

Just an FYI, DO NOT uninstall that software or you will likely lose your video drivers as well.

The only way to do this is by (and be careful... you can REALLY break your computer by clicking the wrong thing in here) clicking Start-Run, and typing msconfig

Hit enter, and a new window will open. Click the Startup tab, find the item in the list, uncheck the box, and click OK.

The computer will ask to reboot, and go ahead and do so.

Again, be VERY careful what you uncheck in here... you can easily turn off antivirus or a firewall, and that can have dire consequences.

I have written a C Graphics Prog.

When I run the prog the exe, it captures Full Screen.

Now I want to copy the screen and take a print out of it.

I have tried using PrintScreen and pasting to a word file, but it didn't work. I have used softwares like HyperSnap,ScreenCapture but none worked.

Unless you have some "very" special configuration on your computer, the print screen key must work... Try to paste after you press print screen in Paint (not in Word...) because the result it's an image... If you want a good free screen capture prog, google for "irfanview download". Actually its an integrated Grapichs card and hence It does not give complete playability to a high-end 3d games.It all depends on the Graphics Power needed by the computer game in question.

One thing you can do is go to Run-type dxdiag,Enter

A window will pop up for certification , just say no,then another will pop up with details about your computer.

So go to the Display tab and check out how mch ideo Memory you have,if it is lesser than the system requirements of the game in question then obviously you will not able to play the game.

Also if it says shared then it means that it is sharing that memory from the RAM which aain is not good news if you really want to play coo 3D games.

I suggest you buy a graphics card,Then you'll be able to play almost any game you want :D

Apart for that I do recommend that you do not purchase that card because it is quite an old model and if you are interested in getting the Sims 3 in the future you should a newer card that at least supports direct x 9.0c. Feel free to contact me if you still have any inquires.

I've read that the Wii isn't really supposted to be played in HD because the graphics aren't in HD. Because your TV is HD and your Wii and Gamecube are both not HD it might be the reason as to why the graphics may look less "good" than they look on your SDTV.

The 480p only offers a slight improvement. It should look a little better than regular TV, but it's not much.

i have a wii and a hdtv, however, i personally have not encountered this problem. it may be that it was not set up right, or the settings for the tv does not suit the tv. Are the cables plugged in tightly? it is also possible that the tv is attempting to automaticly enlarge the picture on the wii- stretching the image.

It depends on how you have it hooked up. Maybe your TV is trying to upscale the Wii's display to 1080p, which might cause it to look bad.

The Wii only outputs 480p, which is technically EDTV not HDTV. It's going to appear "better" on regular TV because the extra detail just isn't there. Your HDTV is going to upscale any resolution to it's native resolution (in this case probably 720p) and this will introduce artifacts and maybe a little "grainy-ness". Just make sure you change the video settings to output 480p and that should be all you can do. It's never going to look like the 360 or PS3.

P.S. It's 720p not 768p.

It is because accidentally your computer's screen resoultion has decreased. To increase it

first right click on empty space on the desktop.

Then select properties.

click on settings.

You will see the current screen resolution there. Choose/increase the higher resolution.

I know there are many questions out there on graphic cards but I looked through them and none of them fully gave me an answer and I would rather receive a personal experience.

But what I am looking for is a good card for games (The Orange Box, Halo 2, Bioshock and some others) that will give me a reasonable frame rate and be able to handle a good amount of power.

Currently, I have intergraded graphics into the motherboard with a GeForce 6100 + nForce 400, the motherboard is a Gigabye GA-M61VME-S2.

So as for my price range I am thinking in between $100-$150 (maximum $200, but probably won't go that high) and looking for 256 MB+ (preferably 512 MB).

Also I only know little on graphic cards specifically so you may have to help me out a bit.

I just bought an ATI HD 3850... you can find them for about 180 bucks, with 256mb DDR3 ram. You can get 512 for more money, but that much memory is really overrated. With the faster DDR3 ram and the fast GPU, things get processed quickly so more ram isn't really necessary.

Tomshardware, Anandtech, and many other hardware sites have given this one their recommendation. Tomshardware.com ranked it as the most performance for the dollar, as it performs almost as well as some cards that cost upwards of 300 bucks.

You don't want DX10 right NOW, but for every game that is released from this point on, you'll wish you had it. With each new release it will become more and more important.

The most important is to have good memory interface. make sure you get at least 256 bit interface.

I understand you don't need direct X10 with XP, but you may want to go with one just so the card can handle it, once you switch to vista, if you ever will.

I second the ATI Radeon HD 3850. It's a really good value for the price ($180).

If you want to stick to your price range, the the next best thing is the ATI Radeon 1950Pro. You can pick one of these up for $135. This is a great card at that price, but it doesn't have HD acceleration like the 3850, or DX10 support (although DX10 is not worth it in Bioshock.. future games, however, will better utilize DX10).

Both cards are fairly power-hungry. You may have to look at upgrading your power supply if it is some generic thing.

almost all the newer card support pixel shader 2.0 follow the link to newegg and search for 1 in your price range. you computer uses a 4xAGP slot so make sure the card you get fits in that catagory. Also i recomend getting a Nvidia chipset.

Note: DirectX 9 supported cards will work with Pixel Shader 2.0

Note: Also make sure your drivers on your current video card are up to date. That might help fix the problem.

You should have no problem adding a graphics card later. All you need is an AGP or open PCI slot, depending upon the card you are adding. Your BIOS will handle in one of two ways - 1.) It will sense the added graphics card and use it by default(you will need to make sure the drivers are loaded of course), or 2.) You disable the integrated card in the BIOS setup. My computer has an integrated graphics card, but I use an nVidia GeForce 6800 GS.

It's nice to recommend a card, but it's hard to recommend one if you don't know if it's PCI-E or AGP, or it may have neither and only have PCI slots.

Halo 3 isn't out for the PC (Vista) but Halo 2 is and is a 2005 game with 512x512 textures instead of 256x256 textures on the original Xbox.

The ATI HD 2600 is a great entry level card and it should be able to play all those games at full graphics without a lot of post rendering like AA and AF (the 20" has 1680x1050 native res I Believe).

The existing graphics cards is a PCI-e card and therefore replaceable, but not all high end 3D gaming cards are compatible with Mac and may not have drivers for it (even though the drivers are available for windows).

If the card you want to upgrade is supported in OS X 10.x then you can upgrade it yourself (really easy to do, just unplug the old and plug the new one in and install the drivers). To date, Nvidia's flagship 8800 GTX is NOT supported in OS X and won't boot into OS X.

As far as I know , the HD 2600 Pro is the best performing card for the Mac, but it will be able to play the games you listed smoothly. You can buy an ATI X1900XT for the Mac, but it's a DirectX 9 card (is supported by OS X don't waste your money), just wait for something better to come out.

Actually, you aren't out of luck unless you have an older model laptop or one that was geared for business and travel.

Newer laptops produced in the past 2-3 years by several companies (Dell and other high end brands) usually offer laptops that can have their video upgraded thanks to mainstreaming removable video cards. Check your model # on the manufacturer's website and see if it has an upgradeable video card option. If not, then you're stuck with what you have. Even if you have something that's upgradeable, you're looking at 120-300 dollars for better cards.

Also, remember that RAM isn't a magical cure-all for gaming. If your current video chipset/video card can't run something at all, then RAM won't help. If it at least runs the software but does so with a lot of lag then RAM might help. Then again, it might not. Don't go running out to spend your hard earned cash on RAM just yet.

Well, one thing you can do is upgrade your RAM. You RAM is shared, so your current video adapter is using some of your RAM, upgrading your RAM will help the graphics load faster and render smoother. Good luck.

Hey you know what I read on IGN that WOW graphics lacks Polygon.

That set up will run max settings fine.

The graphics are no where near top of the line. You will not be that impressed.

As far as I know there are little graphical improvements here and there, but nothing noticable.

I haven't heard anything about a sequel or a next-gen engine in development, but I'm sure blizzard is considering it if not already started on it.

Graphics on high aren't all that bad, but it doesn't all depend on your graphics card you know. Your monitor has to do with some as well. I have a 19" LCD Widescreen LG Monitor with 3000:1 contrast an 2 mms. It looks nice, but of course the graphics are cartoony so don't expect Oblivion graphics to pop out at you.

You can run it on max with those specs.

I have a written a program for cubic spline interpolation which includes a graphics part where I display the graph of the interpolated polynomial.I was unable to take screenshots of this graph in TC++ 3.0 because it works in DOS mode.

So I thought of using Borland TC++ 4.5 in the Win XP environment.But when I try to compile the program it gives an error message:'Fatal ..\INCLUDE\GRAPHICS.H 19: Error directive: BGI graphics not supported under Windows'.

If TC++ 3.0 runs in a DOS window (or "command line interface," as we call it), doing Alt-Print Screen should put a screenshot onto the clipboard where you can then paste it into Paint (Start-Programs-Accessories-Paint).

You can execute console DOS program under Windows but BGI (Borland Graphics Interface) drivers are DOS drivers and cannot be used with Windows. To use some graphics with Windows, you need either to use Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) -- or move to low level programming that means en essance creation of your own graphics drivers.

IIRC, Borland 4.5 has GDI support but - sorry - i am not 100% sure.

i put my laptops cover down (i have done so many times without problems) and then my screen resolution had gone really big and out of proportion.

i fixed this, and set it how it was.

however the graphics know seem to have go off, and look really sluggish and rubbish really, i am at the monemt working at 32 bits (whatever that it).

how can i improve it, or should i take it to the shop i got it from and use my warranty.

reinstall the driver for your graphics chip.

goto device manager

[start menu/ right click on 'my computer'/select 'manage'/select 'device manager']

open up graphic display adaptors

delete the current driver (may be corrupt or disabled)

reboot windows

windows will now reinstall the working driver automatically.

The card is also a AGP. It should work for you if you have an unused power supply cable (this graphics card requires power direct from the power supply) and if you have a DVI capable monitor since this card has dual DVI outputs (also has an S-video for TV hookup). The GDDR3 is the type of memory built into the card.

Hello, I am Currently running a HP Pavilion 714a, with a Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller.

Honestly I don't know much about computers, so trying to find the right answer on the net is hard if I don't give the right question LOL. Im getting really tired of the computers intergrated graphics card, because there are a whole HEAP of new games coming out, but my card just cant handle them.

I already added 512mb RAM to my excisting 256mb, which helped run the games a bit smoother. I have a 2.4GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor.

Through my research, I found out that it is impossible (?) to remove intergrated graphic cards. Instead you disable them. But Im just not sure what the best graphic card is thats compatible with my motherboard.

So before I go out and waste my money on new graphic cards, I want to know whats compatible with my comp. I've checked the HP Website but nothing there really helped me. And I think I have 2 PCI ports (?) or AGP ports (?) Any help would be great

In your quest to find graphics cards, realize that they will usually say AGP 8x/4x on them, or just 8x. An 8x slot runs those cards faster than the 4x slot.

You are right about the driver. Just disable it from device manager and let Windows use one of the basic modes of the new card so you can load drivers and configure what you have installed. From there you do the device driver install, reboot, and off you go.

You probably do NOT want to waste PCI ports if you have AGP ports. AGP is designed for graphics cards. PCI is more generic.

Go with the high end for the PCI-Express because eventually you will go SLI (two cards running at the same time). Then you can just get another one.

This will cost you less in the long run. I'm running 2 7600gt's on mine and I can't believe I was wanting to stay with AGP.

You will have to get a whole new set up though. New processor and motherboard and possible ram. Trust me it's worth the upgrade. So start saving your money.

The GeForce 7900 series is probably the best fit for your budget. GeForce is known for its quality graphics and I personally don't use anything else. Some things to look for however are GDDR3 RAM types and PCI Express chipsets. Whatever you do don't setlle for anything less than 256MB GDDR3, most games run very high these days and you don't want to be the one who get owned.

All 7600GT's are 16x. 16x refers to how fast they can receive data from the processor. And no, you don't have to have two of them. They're SLI-ready, not SLI-mandatory. See the difference?:)

And yeah, 7600GT's aren't bad. I've got one in this computer, as a matter of fact. You just won't be maxing out Crysis or Oblivion with one. They're good for older games, or newer games at lower resolution and in-game settings.

We bought a Dell Dimension B110 for our kids. They are elementary school age and just need it for homework, games and internet. However, they can't run any of the games we've bought them like Lego Star Wars or Disney/Pixar Cars because our graphics card apparently doesn't support them (pixel shading, etc.). The card that came with the system is an Intel 82865G. What do I need to buy and can I add it myself? They are just kids who want to run some basic games, so I don't want anything that costs more than the system itself or requires a visit from the Geek Squad to install. ;-)

Most Dells have an intergrated video and sound system, meaning they are built right into the motherboard, most have an open AGP or PCI-E slot and atleast 2 or 3 PCI slots, the cards would cost you around $120.00, but the issues are with the Dell warrantys, I used to work for there Tech Support center in Edmonton AB Canada we did all of North America and the UK.

If you open and alter the unit and it is not done by a authorized Dell service person, all warranties will be voided, check the phonebook look for a service center, for the part when doing the change go to Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA.

I recommend a 5.1 audigy sound card, it will be about $65, and a 128 mg AGP or PCI-E video card, it will run $45-60.00, but make sure you have them done by the proper service people, they can reapply the seal on the back of the CPU and keep your warranties intact.

The difference is processing power. A generic card will allow you to play basic to moderate games and do everyday items however the moment you try something high end you will see the problems (slow frame rate - think of it like a matrix scene) and at some point it won't be worth playing.

The cards you selected appear to be the same however if you have a game in mind that you want to play compare the graphics requirements to the card that you want to buy and get that one.

It really depends on what you use your computer for. If you aren't a hardcore gamer (if you're a hardcore gamer and you don't know what a graphics card does, there'd be something wrong with you...) so I'm gonna assume you're not a gamer (that doesn't mean you've never played a video game, just that you don't play them every second of every day). You'd get the most increase in performance with extra RAM. I had 128MB in my laptop (Win2000, P3 850MHz) and it was horribly slow, but after I stuck in 2 sticks of 256MB RAM and put it at 512MB, it ran a LOT smoother. I also upped the RAM in my 768MB RAM desktop to 1.5GB RAM, but I didn't notice as much of an improvement, although it was definitely better.

A graphics card is a device that renders images to your screen. If you only use your computer for browsing the Web, editing documents, email, IM, and other things that use simple graphics, even a dated graphics card will work just fine. Dont worry about the memory type on your board. It had nothing to do with the type of memory your motherboard can support.

The important thing is to check if your board support AGP (and which speed) or PCI-Express. From there, any card that fit on the slot you have should work fine.

No do not try to ovrclock a laptop graphic card! Laptop cooling systems barely manage to cool the system under normal work load. You cant upgrade the cooling system and it will overheat.

Hi Seth as long as the rest of your pc is up to scratch (at least mid range dual core cpu and 1-2 gigs ram) u should be fine.

BUT, Don't get the gts. the gts is old technology now that the new _gt_ has come out. the gt is a much faster card.

yeah 8800 series is good for gaming.......dont know your specs so it is hard to say if you can just plop this card in and run smoothly.....you need a decent psu to run these cards.....no less than 450 watts is what i think you need.....cpu comes into play...pretty much need a dual core, and ram also comes into play here.......if your running xp 2 gigs should do and vista 2-3 gigs is what ya need.........tiger direct is good, another good place to try is newegg.com......cant really help to much more....thats just the basics for a decent comp.......i would definetly check the wattage on your psu though so ya know what you can get.......

Nvidia cards are really really good. Try and get something that has at least 256MB of memory. Any less than that and the games won't look as pretty. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7800 that has 512 MB of memory and it makes things look pretty nice. Also check out ATI Radeon video cards.

I am pretty sure that you will need Direct X 10 card for them to work well, which only works with Vista, and more so because the next wave of games (the ones released in the next 6-10 months) use Direct X 10. Is it possible to get one for under 200 bucks? I don't think so... but they might have gone down. My fiance bought his two Gforce FX 8800 (overclocked) video cards for $700.00 (350 each) but that was a few months ago. Bioshock plays great on it, and from what he says there won't be issues with games like Crysus and such. We live in Canada though, and most electronics cost more for some stupid reason.

Absolutely not, I still like to play the vintage games (Mario Bros 1-3, Tetris, Pac Man) and I still love them. just bought a new graphics card today and installed it and pluged it in bust it keep crashing! i have told the BIOS to use that card and told the OS to use that card. every time i start an application it crashes to a blue screen with writing on. it says the driver is mismanaging system PTEs. and then dose a physical memory dump.

The Driver you are using is not compatible with your system. I strongly suggest you contact ATI and let them know what is going on and ask if they have a different Driver you could install.

If they don't, please do not be tempted to use a third party Driver. While some of these types of Drivers may work out just fine, others can cause great system instability, such as you are currently experiancing, and even worse, cause the need to reinstall your OS, or take it back to the condition it was in when you bought it with the Recovery disks which should have came with your system, unless it is a Dell.

Dell never sends out the appropriate Recovery disks, because, according to Dell, their particular Recovery Patition, which is installed alone with the OS, is sufficient to fix any errors which may arise. They are wrong, and I had to order the disks a short five weeks after spending $3,000 dollars on a nice computer system. My system crashed so badly it wiped out Dell's vaunted Recovery program! Bummer!

I had to wait nearly three weeks to get the disks, due to the Fourth of July holiday, and they put off mailing them, then got confused about whether or not they had already mailed them, causing it to drag out to nearly three freaken weeks. :-( Once the disks arrived, it took a half hour to reinstall the OS, and another hour to finish installing the Utilities and Drivers disk, and the software programs. Had I had the disks, I would have been up and running in an hour and a half, instead of three weeks.

If ATI is unable to give you Driver(s) which work with your system, you will need to return that video card, and buy a different one. If you do need to do this, make sure you read the specs on your motherboard to be sure what type of video card is best for your particular system. I strongly reccomend you consider buying one like it came installed with, only one which is an upgrade.

Some motherboard work best with certain video card manufacturer's. I know this sounds odd, but it is simply the truth. My system works best with ATI, and my husband's works best with G-Force. I would only change to a different manufacturer, if and only if, my motherboard specifications clearly stated it was fully compatible. I am building my second computer, (the first houses our Windows Home Server, and its built-in video is sufficient for that application) and my motherboard I choose clearly states that ATI is best choice. While the Nvidea could work, it is reccomended I use ATI for best compatibility.

I am sorry you are having such a horrific time with this video card. Please make sure you have the proper logo on the card of your choice, such as for Vista or XP. This means that the card and it's Drivers have gone through the stringent testing in the Microsoft hardware labs.

Halo 3 isn't out for the PC (Vista) but Halo 2 is and is a 2005 game with 512x512 textures instead of 256x256 textures on the original Xbox.

The ATI HD 2600 is a great entry level card and it should be able to play all those games at full graphics without a lot of post rendering like AA and AF (the 20" has 1680x1050 native res I Believe).

But if you want to go for the full experience (and why wouldnt you) you definatly need a HDTV, some 360 games on a HDTV you will forget your playing a game, actual game play looks like cut scenes. Oldblivion will not help at all really. The purpose of that program is to allow Oblivion to run on cards that do not have DirectX 9, but yours does have DirectX 9 so it would really make no difference.

Um I need to know if the PNY Verto GeForce FX 5500 128MB DDR PCI graphics card has T%26amp;L (Texture and Lightening) features on it. I need to know because I want to play some new games, and all I have is a PCI slot on my system. No AGP and no PCI Express. If you know any better graphic cards that have Direct X 9.0 on them and that are PCI cards, please tell me. And I will be very happy. Thank you.

actually, to have Direct X 9.0, you don't need T%26amp;L. i have an Intel庐 Graphics Media Accelerator 900 128 MB graphics card with VS/PS and all the other features, but no T%26amp;L, just because Intel is lazy. It doesn't make a difference. I would recommend an ATI Radeon 9250 (at least that's what I have) and it's fast enough, and supports T%26amp;L.

p.s. if you have a fast enough processor, just keep your old graphics card and the T%26amp;L calculations will just go through the processor.

and by the way, it stands for Hardware Transform %26amp; Lighting, not texture and lightning...

there isn't any other PCI vid card that will go beyond the 5700 series, or any that can beat it. If you're stuck with PCI, then this card is top of the line. The 5500 is a mainstream vid card while the 5700 is performance, you get faster core/mem and a totally upgraded FX engine.

a 5700 le is BARELY an upgrade from a 5500 both performance wise and technology wise.

actually there is no technology difference except the 5700 uses the cine fx 2.0 engine vs the cine fx 1.0 of the 5500.

In your case, more ram would help, since the computer is out of ram, and has to use the hard drive.

virtual memory running low is about your ram or memory and has nothing to do with your video card. When you have less then 512mb memory (RAM), your computer will use part of your hard drive to act as RAM. If your hard drive gets almost full this will limit the amount of virtual memory you can run and then your system will slow down.

You should look into a memory (RAM) upgrade. 2gb seems to be most popular because most operating systems support it as well as the newer motherboards.

How do web illustrators create graphics/icons/logos?

I'm interested in creating a set of graphics for a website I'm working on. I always wondered how people create nice graphics. Specifically, what software do they generally use? Do they draw the icons directly on the computer or start with a hand drawing first? It seems really difficult to try and use a mouse to draw, so are there other affordable input devices?

How do web illustrators create graphics/icons/logos?

Artists usually create their logo artwork in an illustration program like Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia/Adobe Freehand, Corel Draw or a number of other vector based programs. (Illustrator is the most popular.) These programs have various tools that allow you to easily create all sorts of shapes. Mastering these programs to create logos similar to those you see everyday is very tough so dont expect great results immediately. By the way, sometimes artists do start their logos by drawing them on paper and then scanning them in. But after they scan them in, they basically trace the image using the tools in the illustration program. (You can't just scan it in and use it if you want it to look good.)

Once the final artwork is created in the illustration program, the artist takes into a bitmap imeage program like Photoshop or ImageReady to optimize it for the Web (make the file size smaller and acceptable for use over possibly slow bandwith). Logos and linedrawing artwork should be be optimized as a GIF image 99% of the time. Photos should be usually be saved as jpg images.

For more info on creating web graphics, I recommend books by Lynda Weinmann. She has a site called lynda.com that is all about web graphics. Visit adobe.com as well. They have tutorials about using their programs for designing and optimizing graphics.

In my opinion, you have to have a pretty good background in art to really be good at graphic design. Just knowing your way around programs like illustrator and photoshop is no different than not knowing English and using MS Word.

Also, it would be in your best interest to stick with the Adobe tools if you have the money. They are the industry standard every profressional worth their salt uses.

Well, the favorite for creating web graphics is probably Adobe Photoshop, but that's too expensive for some. Personally, I use the GIMP (gimp.org) for all my image editing needs.

As for mouse drawing, there is no real need to do anything that requires any sort of real precision if you have a good image editor. Things like gradients, pattern fills, layers, and versatile selection tools allow for easy creation of professional quality images for the skilled user.

I am a graphic and web designer w/ BA and 10+ years of professional experience. Last 8 years have been more dedicated to web pages.

If you want to get into it, get Macromedia Studio - you will have all you will ever need for web design.

Icons tend to be smaller, so a nice clean vector program like Illustrator (or Flash or CorelDraw) works well. Illustrator has the added bonus of having the "Save for Web" function which allows you many web optimization options.

Photoshop is also handy in that the shape tools have a lot of the common shapes you are likely to need when making icons (mouse pointers, envelopes, checkboxes, etc.).

As a general rule of thumb, images with solid colors and hard edges should be saved as GIFs. Images that have a lot of subtle color variation (like photos) should be saved as JPGs.

When creating icons, I always draw thumbnails with good old pen and paper. Try doing three to four variations and pick the one you like best.

For brainstorming ideas, try doing a Google image search and set the image size of your results to "small". You can see how hundreds of other designers have made images for common icons like "email", "contact", "more info" and "search", for example.

Most use Adobe Illustrator and have it in vector format so you can rescale it after creating it; i.e., you don't draw a 50x50 pixel icon at that size - you create it at say, 500x500 (whatever will allow you to have the best detail) and then shrink it to the size you want. Photoshop and fireworks is okay, but Illustrator gives you the most "power".

You can always draw first and then scan it in to illustrator, after which you will need to trace the scan to vector rendering. There isn't an automatic program that will create any of these for you in a snap; you need talent and know how in using Illustrator if you want to generate really good work.

You may want to consider going on the web and just look for icon sets that are for sale (they're not cheap if you want good ones); for logos, you can get them done relatively cheap using a designer(s) that can punch these out quickly.

Theres a laptop with 384 mb of shared graphics memory and 512 mb of dedicated . The other has 1023 mb of shared graphics memory but only has 256 mb of dedicated . I don't even know what video memory is , so if you have anything helpfull to say that would be good .

Video memory (aka VRAM) is simply the amount of memory alloted to various tasks such as watching movies, playing games etc from its respectable graphics card whether separate or onboard. Ideally the more memory there is available the better the performance and efficiency. Shared memory means the memory is shared between different hardware components such as I/O, RAM etc as well as the visuals itself. Separate cards are better, but onboard cards run quicker as they are hardwired directly to the motherboard.

Shared memory in my opinion is always problematic.

Graphic memory is usually on the graphic card and is called vRAM, Dedicated memory is RAM and sits in its own slots on the motherboard and holds information for rapid access.

At the lower end of the computer market there are machines with shared memory, where the graphic card has no built-in memory but uses some of the RAM on the motherboard. This always results in an inferior performance.

As a rule of thumb I would suggest most good performing graphics card have 256 - 320 onboard vRAM, and for XP a minimum of 512motherboard RAM is necessary and for Vista 1GB though realistically you should double for both.

RAM is becoming important in computing for it affects performance.

My advice if you can afford it, is to try and get a laptop with a separate RAM and vRAM.

basically the video graphic cards depend upon its memory and and and....and a processing speed of integrated processor and memory (bole to Frequency ) . The shared memory doesnt ve enough speed comparision to inbuilt ie dedicated memory with inbuilt processor of video card. For gaming and watching movies at high graphics all u need 256 mb ram in this date(sufficient) but actual High graphical Games are in demand these days ,bulky graphics caching is needed at a very high frequency and thus required a lot of memory to allocate storage immediately . So i recommend 512 mb dedicated graphics memory for gamers for efficient result ,doesnt matter how much shared memory is..ya there shud be a shared memory also but dedicated memory is must in all the way of thinking. Yes it is possible, but you will only be using one of the dvi inputs (the dvi input on the man video card of course). Dual 7600's should make for some decent graphics. :)

I'd say at the very least this one:

I played a video in windows media player and now theres lines all over my screen. Is it a virus or the video screwed up my graphics card.

Corrupted drivers - reinstall the graphic driver by having the lastest patch.

if these are the situation.

To check your monitor, use OSD to check your monitor is crumbled or not. If it is no, either the graphic card, graphic card driver, Windows Media Player outdated? or the video format compatible problem.

Reboot your computer. Do you have lines going through EVERYTHING (Windows Desktop, Internet Explorer, etc.) or is just when you play videos in Media Player? Check the video plug at the back of the computer and make sure its tight. Try connecting a different montior. See if it does the same thing.

Okay... lets explain this in simple terms...

You know how you can post pictures up on your myspace, in your own Photo Albums... Lets say under "My photos".

And then After you upload the picture you have an option to put a caption underneath the picture.... Usually with just words....

Well i have noticed some people have picture/graphics where the captions usually would be.... How would I do that?

After it's uploaded you'll find that there's...4 [?] different codes. My internet is being wierd lately so I can't go onto the website right now to tell you which one you need to go for, BUT on myspace, in the caption bit, type:

Then look for the code on tinypic that looks similar to this:

Well, copy and paste only the inside of this code, not the IMG stuff on either side.

paste this after the %26lt;img src= and once you've done that, just put a %26gt; to end this code.

Yeah the graphics would still look good as an HDTV would but a regular TV can't transmit all of the game's colors and maximum screen resolution. There will be very unnoticeable squarish edges in the models of the characters, environments, cars, etc. though but it won't really bother your game-play, like I said VERY unnoticeable.

Yes, it will look good, better than a regular XBox, but you are going to have to sheel out for HDTV if you want the graphics looking as good as possible.

It looks waaay better than PS2/Xbox/GC quality on a regular TV! (I know this because I have them all and no HDTV) I still have trouble noticing the difference between HDTV and regular in the stores mind.

Can't wait till in 10 years when V-HDTV: Very-HDTV; (where u can see the wrinkles of the characters and blemishes in the skin) comes out and then in a further 10 years U-HDTV: Ultra-HDTV; where u can use a microscope on the screen and view all the cells and atoms of the games. :-P

the problem is I can't see certain things on the games i have

You have a PCI Slot, not AGP. waltzme2heaven Would have known that, but you added those additional details after he posted.

For PCI, the best card around is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... but since you have a Dell, your power supply will be quite low. Chances are you're not going to be able to run anything better than that.

First, I would definitely get more RAM. Buy another 256MB stick to put in your mobo. That is your first problem. Next to find out what graphics card you have now, right click the desktop, click properties, settings, and tell us what it says under display. If you are looking for a better one, you have to find out if your motherboard has AGP, PCI, or PCI-E graphics card slots. Then buy a card according to which slot your mobo has (you might have to do some research and open up your computer for this)

I looked up your PC and it looks like you have an AGP slot available. There is on-board graphics, so if your monitor cable is plugged in near the printer port vice being on a separate card, then you are probably using on-board graphics. The option was to have an ATI 9800 Pro graphics card installed from the factory, which would be fine for Sims 2.

If you don't have an add-in card, then you probably need one. I would suggest getting an AGP card with 128mb of memory. The reason I'm not suggesting a 256mb or 512mb card is because those tend to need special power requirements, special plugs, and can lead to a Power Supply upgrade and more. At worst, a 128mb card will just need an extra floppy drive power connector, or a hard drive power connector that should be already laying wrapped up inside your PC. Easy install.

Whether you get nVidia or ATI is a personal choice (Ford- Chevy thing). Either way, stick with AGP 8x, 128mb and that will get you the card to play nice.

It is going to depend on the rest of the laptop. If you have a 1280x800 screen, a good Duo CPU, and 2 GB of RAM, then this card is perfectly fine for most games. WoW will run fine and other games will too. The First Person Shooters (Prey, Quake and all) will need to be tuned down for performance. Games on games.yahoo.com will fly on the system. Civ 4 will run (with AA off).

For a laptop, the 7400 is considered a mainstream GPU.

I have a laptop with one and use it to play games on the road and to view my SlingBox. It works quite nicely.
